About Anjali
Nepal is my ancestral
home, but I was raised mostly in India. I am of Newari descent, a race
of people who were the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu valley.
Historians believe the Newars settled the Kathmandu valley in the early
3rd or 4th century AD.
From my maternal grandmother’s mother I inherited Lepcha blood. Lepchas
were the original inhabitants of Sikkim. They are now a vanishing tribe.
My childhood and young adult years were spent in Catholic boarding
schools, with my maternal grandmother (Aji) in her home near Darjeeling
(of Darjeeling-tea fame), with my grandfather (Assam-ko-Aja) and his
household in Assam and occasionally with my paternal grandmother in
Rajbiraj, an agrarian town on the borders of Nepal and India.
Dan and I married on April’s Fools Day (Dan’s Birthday) in 1971. Our
honeymoon was a bus ride through the Khyber Pass, horseback through
parts of Afghanistan, then bus again though Iran and Turkey to Greece
then
by train through parts of Europe. We flew to London then New York,
Greyhound to California and up the west coast to Seattle. From there we
transported a spanking new green 1971 Mercury Cougar to Alaska for a
family friend. We then settled for a while in a logging camp in Southeast Alaska.
During my years in Alaska I learned how one could survive for months
without television, phone, and running water. I learned to fish, hunt,
cook, build cabins, manage a bar, restaurant and hotel. I drank water
from the mountain streams the clearest I had ever seen. From my kitchen
window I watched black bears fish in the stream by our cabin. I watched
the moonlight shimmering in the water across the crystal snow covered
beach from our loft bedroom window. I enjoyed the silence.
When we moved to the country in Washington State, I honed my skills in
gardening and cooking. Here in Colorado, I work in a library about five minutes from home so I have
access to just about any book or media I want. I am now making time for
cooking, gardening, reading, musings and completing my cook-book memoir.
